    This is from the article:

"Their business is giving consumers an option to buy products and pay over time without charging interest to the consumer. Splitit works by maintaining a hold on a consumer’s credit card for the entire amount but actually charging only the current installment. That way, Splitit is assured that the consumer is good for the total price and Splitit’s system only works if the consumer has enough credit available to cover the full purchase price. Splitit pays the retailer the value of the entire sale, less an amount to account for the time value of money they’re paying out to the retailer before all the payments are collected from the consumer."

So what is the actual point of this payment system? You must have funds available to cover the FULL purchase cost of whatever it is you are buying. If you do have the funds available and you opt to use Splitit, the service will freeze the funds on your debit/credit card to cover the FULL cost of your purchase. This means that you are unable to use the funds that you had available on your card for any other purchase because they are frozen by Splitit. What difference does it make if the you pay for your purchase directly in full or have the FULL amount frozen on your card and paid off in instalments? The funds are still unavailable to the customer to use for any other purchase. Is it a psychology thing? i.e. when you look at your statement you only see small amounts being transacted in increments rather than a lump sum? Or is it purely to not over stretch your credit limit so that you can repay your debt within the given time frame to not attract excessive credit card interest? If so, then this payment method only offers limited advantage - CREDIT CARDS ONLY and for those who struggle to make repayments on large ticket items... ? Maybe I'm missing something...

This "feature" of the Splitit payment system is primarily what was criticised in the reviews I posted earlier... REVIEWS
