A NATIONAL broadband network run by Telstra would be more expensive and provide 10 times less value compared with today's market rates.

Telstra today submitted its proposal to be in the running for up to $4.7 billion in taxpayer funding to build the Government-backed NBN. The telco's submission was not a full bid.

For 200MB download quota with speeds of 1Mbps, Telstra would charge its NBN customers $39.95 per month, it said in its proposal.

In comparison, the same fee on iiNet’s plan would give consumers 10 times the download quota at 2GB. This is coupled with a network that scales up to 24Mbps.
