Court documents tell us (this is all fully substantiated):
The ATO asked for notice if he wanted to leave the country. Soon (days, not weeks) after, JK applied to DFAT to leave in January. He also sold his house in the same period. The ATO lodged and were granted a departure prohibition order mid-December, so that he couldn't leave the country. Two days after the departure prohibition order was issued, JK attempted to board an international flight and was stopped at the airport.
The reason for which he moved up his flight from January to December is currently unknown. Karantzis claims he never received the departure prohibition order, and timing is coincidental.
