We have been taught to have faith over many many years before science ever really existed, it's apart of our culture. For many people it's the only book they have ever read, the world is mostly uneducated, do you think people in villages in africa discuss quantum theory ?
It is easy for us in the west to disregard religion because we are now educated but you must be able to understand why people have faith in religion. Imagine if you see death all the time, do you want to take science's view or take a religious view and maybe irrational view that there is more to life.
I think religion has instilled many virtues and positive values into our culture, and to disregard it's positive influence because of the acts of a few fanatics is ridiculous
