We only have a sample of one - us - to consider.
The Universe is an unimaginably vast place with countless stars and planets, so who knows how common life is? Who knows how common complex life may be throughout the Universe? Who knows how common technological societies may be? Even if there are one or two per Galaxy at any given time, that is still a lot as far as numbers go, billions of civilizations scattered throughout time and space.
But we do not know. We can only speculate. Just like the idea of a Creator is speculation. Just that there are folks who are not satisfied with that. Folks who want to know, who want certainty where no certainty exists......
