There are a lot of places directional sound will prove to be useful. Security speakers at e.g. voice activated devices such as ATMs (think Max Smart's "Cone of Silence"). Back of seat screens in cars - only the occupant of the seat behind can hear the full sound beam. E.g. the kids could watch and listen to different cartoons! Directionality for TV's and home theatre and music systems - valuable not just for listening/blocking but also for sound level adjustment. This would presumably be set up initially for preconfigured seating configurations, but by using the reflected ultrasonics from the AP speaker this could be tracked dynamically and could adjust when the listener moves. Directionality could permit different languages to be sent to different listeners - that would be a fairly sophisticated application, but if the device manufacturer could use the AP's innate capabilities to do that it would be a significant feature.

The point is that the technology has a range of novel capabilities that can be applied to several potential applications not previously feasible. It will be something consumer device developers will be able to exploit to achieve new levels of innovation. But if they don't use everything they still can direct sound to fill a room with good hifi sound to every listening position.
