Dub, I haven't had a chance to read the article you cite yet but on first impression I would suggest that The companies that make up the transport index are US companies. So, while they may be taking goods in directions that may not suit the long-term health of the US economy they are making profits (or losses) for those US transport companies and that's what any market index is about.....
May post again when I've read the whole article but for mine, Dow Theory still intact...
