amd pulls ahead of intel with dual-core chips

AMD will beat rival chipmaker Intel to the punch by delivering its first multi-core processors next year. The company has completed design work for the next-generation AMD64 dual-corechips , which are based on based on 64-bit architecture.

Products based on the technology will be available to the x86 server market in mid-2005, with chips for high-end PCs expected later in the year.

This new, "double-engine" semiconductor technology is expected to provide better performance for servers and for such tasks as video editing and high-end graphics applications. In essence, the processors function as two chips inside a single product, doubling chip speed.

Last month, Intel announced that it was canceling two upcoming chips, including the successor to the company's successful Pentium 4 line, to concentrate on a dual-core processor for desktop and server applications. Intel has slated its dual-processor products for 2005.
