You most definitely are not witnessing the collapse of free market capitalism but more likely the rise of a new global economic power (China obviously). The big question is how the usa will regain the lead - maybe never again. Their lead as a world super power in military terms is as yet out of reach of China (for now). The USSR was brought down by a combination of factors, 1 of which was the cost of their military budget, but will america learn from that? Probably not.
It's pure fantasy to believe that prices and values will forever increase; we need this downturn and to re-evaluate everything before we can move on to the next boom when ever and what ever that may be.
