Having joined HC around 2013, I remember the tail end of that whole mess where the ruling in the FCA was made and the change in terms an conditions etc that occurred after the ruling. It wasn't on a thread I was involved with and began before I was even registered. But, it was made very clear here and in the media what was at stake.
Having worked in the media for a long time, I had to sit through (every year) the legal-begals give us the definition of defamation every year and go through the mechanics of the way the law works.
That isn't the reason I remain polite on these forums. That is motivated by being a person who goes to bed every night comfortable in the way I conduct myself. I won't say I am perfect - but I try to be.
This isn't legal advice but a simple summary. If you print (including online anonymously ) something about and individual that is not able to be backed up by facts and damages the reputation of someone in the eyes of a reasonable bystander. If you can't meet that rule of law then maybe its time to self moderate or simply apologise.
