It's a good idea but most of the rainfall is on the eastern side of the GDR. A project to divert water through to the western side is like a snowy rivers project, so expensive there is no payback and mining is the lesser of the considerations. Capping off the waters escaping from bores from the great artesian basin is a bigger priority that can assist mining area such as Mt Isa. Bores MUST be capped and the Nationals ans Independants (political) are absolutely useless in leading the charge along with irresponsible pastoralists who have failed to do much about it. Most pastoralists should be whipped for it. most of the money wasted in royalties for regions could've been put in protecting the environment and capping off these bores instead of wasting the money on stupid statues and useless infrastructure which is what has happened to it. but this is nothing to do with RRL ;-)
