Companies that are currently selling whatever tech/product are continually updating their products with new superior versions for sale all the time. Just because something is upgraded or updated doesn't stop companies from selling their prior versions.
An Apple computer today is unrecognisable from the earliest versions, but it didn't stop Apple from selling those earlier versions at the time.
A company either has tech that is mass market saleable or it isn't. Both Air2O3 and Bluemist were touted as near ready for market, then dumped for changes, or more research, or whatever. A normal tech company would have had sales of the earlier versions to provide the cashflow for further development.
No-one waits to produce the 'perfect' product before sales because there is no such thing. If they did have a mass market product, the logical path is to start sales and keep doing R&D to improve and sell updated versions later.
