is there anything good about carbon tax?

It seems unlikely that carbon tax will do anything much to reduce co2 emissions and Australia doesn't have alternative energy for people to switch to if our present and currently readily available power source becomes too expensive.

Shouldn't there be readily available and affordable alternative power BEFORE we lose the power we have due to high cost and we find ourselves with limited power? IMO, it seems way to premature to be taxing our primary power source.
