A little sprinkle of Barite also helps control downhole pressure
Bentonite also provides viscosity to transport cutting from the hole, reduces fluid loss by caking the hole wall, and forms a gel (as you mentioned) to suspend cuttings when pumping needs to stock (e.g. drill pipe connection) rather than all the dirt falling back to the bottom of the hole!
