is this in the public interest

Yesterday I read of a young Perth man (early 20's) who was yesterday convicted in a Perth court for stealing. He received a fine of $500? and a life ban from the Burswood entertainment complex however he was spared a conviction when his lawyer John Hammond successfully argued that he be granted a spent conviction.

The man was arrested and detained for around three hours at the Casino after he FOUND 2 x $100 bills on the floor of the Burswood Casino here in Perth.

Unless I'm missing something I cannot see how this is/was in the public interest, and I'm happy to be corrected if I've missed something here.

Yes from a moral standpoint he probably should have made efforts to find the owner; taking the cash to the nearerst police station would have been my own course of action.

However to have been arrested and detained like he was is extreme given the circumstances in my view of course.

Then again what more can one expect from the heavy handed, over ambitious staff that work in such establishments!

The Magistrate also needs a reality check in my view.
