Ethanol industry eyes production boost

The organisation representing the ethanol industry says Australia could be producing more than 1 billion litres in the next decade if conditions continue to improve.

Four hundred industry members are meeting in Brisbane for Ethanol Conference 2006.

The executive director of Renewable Fuels Australia, Bob Gordon, says progress will be monitored to determine what changes are needed.

He says the Australian industry is poised to help in the imminent fuel crisis.

"If the oil companies meet their public commitments and known industry growth and known industry projects that are proceeding to construction and plant completion, we could readily see over a billion litres of ethanol and biodiesel being available to the consumer by 2010," he said.

Farm lobby group AgForce says the ethanol industry must focus on improving its product's image.

The AgForce grains president, Lyndon Pfeffer, says Australia's industry has not developed at the same rate as other countries.

"We have experienced the same myths and misinformation as other countries, where they have tried to develop," he said.

"It's time to hear and learn the truth, to overcome the nonsense and excuses put up by the various sectors against ethanol production."
