1 earthquakes are always a concern though you make it sound like the pit is on top of the most seismically active place on earth, like the ring of fire. Where in reality it's not tectonic plates rather glacial movements. I just wanted to clarify that point.
2 we know of a pipe that connects the ocean to the pit (and vice versa) therefore it shouldn't be too much of an environmental risk if there's already ocean movements. In fact my guess would be the government would prefer the pit to be emptied and sealed off from the ocean like it was before the closure of the mine.
Remember, the pit hasn't been filled up "somehow" we have an explanation being a pipe.
