with your point 3, you've misread said articles. It appears that THE LARGEST can reach 5, not frequently reach 5. Luckily a quick google search brings up all of the data, as well as many links to research papers.
NRO ring up EPM tomorrow and ask about where exactly the pipe is, the presence of said pipe connected to the ocean would indicate a flow of water between the 2 sources. Hence why I said there's potential the government would like for that pit to be emptied and the pipe sealed.
If the pipe is through the wall I'm sure they could have worked a way to dig a tunnel, my guess would be how most mining tunnels are made. By blasting.
