As you rightly point out, that's a lot of water in the pit. With the new synthetic Cryolite in the market, why would you maintain this mine and the people on site? Add to the the need to drain it after winter that took around twenty days, then the drilling, then blasting, then trucking etc. When prices spiked I'm sure it became viable to rake over the tailings a few times.
All I see here is a Kodak/Video Easy moment in time where science ended a 100 year monopoly for a resource that required exporting from practically the end of the earth from within the ice.
