Perhaps it was harder, Harder? Its right there in a pile at the pits bottom. How could it be any easier? more expensive, Its more expensive to dig it up and put it on a ship then whats mined beside it? less possible back then. Less possible? Its in a lump on the pit floor. Does it look less possible to dig up as the pure cryolite was. I would assume it as possible as anything else in the pit that was all removed.
I suspect its something else. Call it a hunch.But maybe it is the pit wall collapsing as you said. Who knows. Needs more research maybe. As so far nobody has been too sure here and I cant seem to get the answers from those whod Id hope would know
