Regarding the position of the pipe, everybody seems to have forgotten that gbb gave us an answer (my emphasis).
".i will say it again the wall which is 10 plus meters thick has a pipe connecting to the ocean at about low water mark this allows for the denser sea water to come in and sink ,believe it or not this pipe has a tap in it which allows you to shut the water off when you wish simple, easy and sensible ."
