I might be stating the obvious here, but larger molecules vibrate at a slower frequency, and requires longer laser wavelengths for resonant excitation (i.e 16um for UF6). Smaller molecules on the other hand vibrate faster (higher frequency), and therefore the laser system is designed at correspondingly shorter wavelengths.
And hot off the press, seems the Belgians are also seeing a market opportunity to produce Mo-99.
