Telstra Corporation Ltd chief executive David Thodey is tight-lipped about whether the company's $11 billion National Broadband Network (NBN) agreement will produce a dividend for shareholders, but said a “dividend opportunity” may exist as a result of the deal, according to the Australian Financial Review.

Telstra has promised to pay a 28 cent dividend for the next two fiscal years, and the company's board will produce a capital management initiative only once Telstra's deal with the NBN, already approved by shareholders, is endorsed by regulators.

“We are very conscious, for a company like Telstra with such a large retail shareholder base and also big institutions, that the dividend policy is very important to them in terms of a way of giving returns back to our shareholders,” Mr Thodey said, according to the AFR.

“The board's very conscious of that so it will be factored into our capital management strategy,” he reportedly added.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has said it will likely approve the separation of Telstra's wholesale and retail divisions sometime in February, according to the AFR.
