It is true that traders have a bit more flexibility to fiddle with it on the way up, or down, but ultimately it's the overall valuation of the company that matters and how it is perceived going forward. What does happen less post consolidation is the wild swings in price that can happen day to day for exactly the reasons you stated. It won't stop it going for a mad run in whichever direction the week it opens though.
