I saw a farmer on the southern tablelands on the ABC report during the bushfires, he sheltered from the heat of the fire under a very large mulberry tree alongside his house. That got me thinking that planting deciduous trees right around houses in bushfire prone areas might go a long way toward saving those houses, the trees may get killed from the heat but you could replant.
I believe that eucalyptus trees have no place in residential areas.
Canberra used to be planted with exotic trees and had a very colourful autumn display, then in 1972 the Whitlam government decided that the nations capital should have native trees, now the place is a tinderbox and has suffered horrendous fires.
