On saturday morning, I was on United UA839 flying from LAX into Sydney. When we were about 40 minutes from Sydney and 30 minutes from Brisbane, the plane did a 90 degree turn and headed for Brisbane.
Some 20 minutes later, the captain announced that as they were running low on fuel, they had diverted to Brisbane to refuel.
Now how low on fuel were they when they diverted? Sydney was only 10 minutes further away at that point.
According to a news report, united had the same issue with a flight from SFO to Sydney last Thursday. So two flights in 3 days run out of fuel just before Sydney. what is going on with United? Are they tyring to save money on fuel loads?
