Until the Soviet Union collapsed the West (read USA) did not give a rats about islam. They got along just fine. They needed someone else to stir up and pick a fight with when the Russians went away. Also christian missionaries are all over the world - they are all through Indonesia the world's largest islamic country and lets face it, all over India trying to convert the Hindus all over Australia trying to convert us from one thing to another. Fanatic islamist are no different to fanatic christians they both have the same agenda and motivations.
