Think you missed the point altogether.
What he is saying, is that the moral "freedoms" we put forward as a democracy, the more we make a difference between our Society and fundamental Islam, as was the choice between Communism & Capitalism.
He isn't advocating a Holy War, etc, nor recruiting for the Church, but observing quite astutely the real causes.
I do not as a general rule put much faith in Pell, but in this case, he is spot on.
