Remember the mufti got in close enough to pass on the medication and in doing so pulled off a balancing with the possibility the hostage takers were suspicious of his moves, motives, who was following the mufti and him giving their location away knowingly or not.
I think it was a big effort on his part with no financial compensation as the motivator.
