    The problem with molten salt reactors is the magnitude of order increase in low level radioactive waste material that requires safe long term storage! As far as the TWR vs LWR - TWR designs were being designed back in the 1970’s but the costs of development became prohibitive after a number of meltdowns of LWR’s including 3 mile island.
    As far as weapons grade fissile material - from my limited understanding it really depends on the isotope and not the element you start from - I.e U238 -> Th239 -> Pu239
    or U238 -> U239 <- Np239 <- Pu239
    etc
