@Sweetsound I have just misplaced this tome which I began using as a door stop, but I had a recent flooding of corridor and office (well end of March really) with all the attendant chaos, and I then also got seriously ill, with a brief hospital stay. All resolved now, except I still have to re-stack some book shelves . . .
I must try and remember his name, Clark, I think. The book is a wonderful history book with great references and select little 'essay inserts' which catch special historic moments.
Among many others there is a memoir Hitler penned about his childhood, where he remembers being locked in the cellar, among the rats, for a number of days and nights by his father, without food, Mum too frightened to help out. Mother had to address her husband "Sir" (who was also her uncle, so inbreeding is a problem here, too); i.e. "Herr Onkel' and she was totally intimidated by him (and years his junior, of course). This monster was a petty official in the old Austro-Hungarian buerocracy. It is amazing that this little screed survived, as Hitler destroyed everything from his former life, including having his native village and cemetery razed to the ground by his army, when he marched into Austria. The area is now a 'Truppenübungsplatz' for the Austrian Army - the surrounding area is forest and very scenic. I know, because my husband was caught up in doing his military service, when we went back for a visit, and ended up staying for over a year.
I am now going in search of it. Will try checking on Amazon first - it is an amazing book about the History of Europe, right from the beginning, and according to his research, humanity poured into Europe from the East - and still does. Go well Taurisk
