You got him there, bang to rights, that said he'll have some wacky answer, maybe it was a gift, maybe it said just take it in the Good Book. Everyone and their dog knows it was theft at best. They should have been put in Canada, but then maybe the Canadians would have said NFW. Seems they were put the last place they should be, at a guess that's probably down to the British and the Yanks. Two countries that both have a lot to answer for, India/Pakistan for example. It would have been better to put them on a island somewhere far far away - Australia or New Zealand for example.
