The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) was one of the last.
They were defeated in the First World War, in part
by Australian Light Horse at Beersheba.

You could start about 5000 years ago when Moses came back from Egypt
and the jews built the temple #1 on the temple mount in Jerusalem.

This temple was built to house the Arc of thee Covenant
and was destroyed (except for the surviving western wall)
by the Babylonians 3000 years ago.

But this too is far from the beginning.
Carthaginians, Jordanians, Egyptians and the great maritime Roman Empire were all masters here
sometimes for centuries.
