No, nothing was quiet and peaceful. Its because the Zionists were attacking the security forces and Palestinian.

The Zionists had been planning to takeover Palestine and create a State from it (refer Ben Gurion's own notes). Its why they had Plan Dalet - which involved acquisition of weapons and plans to takeover strategic areas within Palestine.
And that's what was Executed in the lead up to 1948.
So when the British forces withdrew, the Palestinian were left on their own - without the experience of a military or militia force.
Hence, they requested Arab countries to help them after Deir Yassin and other massacres.
