Although Mossad may have underestimated the scale of the strike they almost certainly knew it was coming. The Israelis had been watching Hamas growing in its capabilities and belligerence but needed this attack to ensure support from the west so they could hit Hamas hard without too much finger pointing.

Hamas and its leadership are just as stupid as Putin, believing in their imagined superiority when they were just being given enough rope to hang themselves. Unfortunately the big losers in both wars are the innocent civilians from both sides caught up in the hostilities.
