Maybe the bigotry and loathing that was abundant a few decades ago towards Aborigines provides a lesson for us in understanding how Europeans despised Jews and Israelis despise Arabs.

There are always exceptions but I can remember the cruel jokes about Abos coming from otherwise generous and considerate white Australians. The deep hate and loathing, every bit as venomous as the Mississippians or Alabamans towards the "negro".

There was not much sympathy, even though Aborigines were clearly disadvantaged and exploited. The victim becomes the guilty party, paternalism becomes the substitute for kindliness and survival of the fittest becomes to hell with the rest. That was the 60s though and Aborigines are not bottom of the pile now.
