Look I am no patron saint of the USA but they have been pretty bloody handy for Australia since WW2.
You think a population of 22 million occupies this vast, rich continent without many eyes to our North wanted to move in here and take over?
There is currently only 1 thing stopping it and that is our alliance with Uncle Sam.
Until we grow up, spend big money on strategic nuclear ballistic missiles and nuclear power to be completely energy and militarily independant we will always have to follow Uncle Sam around.
