As an individual investor and trader, is hard to beat institutions and brokers, but there are always few ways we can constantly make money if employ good methodology and strategy, although I agree with Mr Buffett the stock market is a machine transferring money from the impatient to the patient, (for investor group). For trading group, the stock market is a pure machine transferring money from the inexperienced (guess 80% - 90%) to the experienced (guess 10 - 20%), in my opinion.
