The news of 40c is quite a shock, but I wonder whether Hanlong is starting low at 40c with an eye on being flexible enough to meet somewhere in the middle between 40c and 57c. The news report from IBank stating that institutions weren't ready to accept below 50c could also be posturing. I have an inkling that a deal will be reached for a price somewhere in the middle, but it's just an inkling.
The other option is of course for the board to cut off talks with Hanlong, allow the price to take a hit, and try to start working back from there. This strategy does of course depend on how confident the board is of retaining African support during yet another, what would prove to be, very long project delay.
It's like a bad soap opera. Good luck for the rest of the week and have the heart burn tablets at the ready!
