Like Catholics who believe that a wafer of bread and a cup of wine is the Body and Blood of Christ, so do owners of Fiat Currencies believe that a $100 bill is worth more than the few cents it costs to print.
It's not, but we have to pretend that a $100 bill is worth $100 or the global economy crashes and retiree savings vanish. The trouble with gold is you can't eat it or build any bridges with it.
