Alan,
new things crop up in underlying technology all the time.
Take some time , get into INL forum. There was a an extensive reply to a technology on patents about one month ago.
But the real barrier to entry is years of getting it right. That is the knowledge barrier. That is not to say their patents are not protecting them.
