Italian people have always criticised the entry by Italy into the Euro. I think there would be some rejoicing in the old country quite frankly if she was rejected from the EU. Relatives of mine speak of 100% inflation in staples soon after the introduction of Euro.
Italians feel they have lost there identity and consider themselves unique, so going back to the lira may be a godsend for some. It would also mean however that the youth of Italy will need to return to doing the hard work that their forefathers were famous for in agricultural sectors. Their is simply not enough work stimulate the economy now. Hidden unemployment remains very high.
I would think that their tools of survival are still strong enough to live off the land, and although a backward step in lifestyle would get a lot of the lazy youthful academics in the university system that are rife throughout the country actually doing some work as opposed to hypothesising and expecting others to pay their costs.
