The Lons le Saunier area is a combination play of CBM and Tight Gas (‘TG’) which covers 3,740 square kilometres of central-eastern France.

Exploration drilling identified a coal resource close to the town of Lons Le Saunier and a resource of several hundred million tonnes has been outlined by drilling. The coal was never mined due to the close proximity of the reserve to the town of Lons le Saunier and its extreme gassy nature. Gas production was recorded from a Jurassic limestone unit which overlies the coal measures. In the northeast section of the permit a single production well Valempoulières #1 produced up to 100,000 million m3 per day (3.5 million scf per day) from the Jurassic limestones. The presence of gassy coals over a wide area suggests that the Lons Le Saunier region could become a major CBM producer

Application has been made for four research permits for hydrocarbons in central Italy. The applications cover in total 1,800 square kilometres and are over four sedimentary basins containing Miocene coal measures. This is also the site of conventional geothermal activities and the area generally is one of enhanced heat flow. The heat flow has had the effect of accelerating the coalification process and one result of this is that the young Miocene coals are in the methane generating window. Mining for coal in the area has been sporadic and was discontinued in 1959 shortly after a large methane gas explosion killed 42 people.
