    I could be wrong, but from what I recall reading, most of the refugees are not interested in stopping in Italy, rather using it as a transit stop only - either because Italy was not complying with or purposely going slow on EU refugee checking requirements, or perhaps their social security arrangements are not as attractive as other parts of Europe.

    As for Iran, I believe it (the refugee crisis) is very much in their interest that a massive majority of the refugees are Sunni - for every Sunni that leaves the Middle East, it strengthens Iran's goals of defacto control over Syria and Iraq and ultimately, a Shiite Caliphate (in opposition to ISIS or some other Sunni Caliphate) -> IRIS (Islamic Republic of Iran/Iraq and Syria).

    The weakening of Europe contrasts interestingly with the strengthening of Iran via the recent Nuclear deal that (surprisingly or not) Obama, Merkel etc were so keen to push and Iran's subsequent spending splurge...
