    osake, I can show you plenty of mills that are as you describe. However, pulp mill engineering is a dynamic field. It is not stuck in time.

    The current engineering design of modern BKP mills ensures they are, for all intents and purposes free of off site odour issues. All odour generation areas are contained and air from those spaces extracted and passed through recovery boiler or, in the case of the Bell Bay mill, another boiler and its backup. That effectively burns off the odour producing compounds.

    Older "modern" mills relied on the recovery boiler alone. They produced odour at start up and shut down when the recovery boiler was not on line. The next generation had an extra boiler to cover periods when the recovery boiler wasn't available (start up and shut down).

    The Bell Bay has a backup for the backup boiler in its layout! If you care to read the IIS you'll see the very low probabilities calculated for the likelihood that none of the three systems will be available.
