I cannot pst verbatum but invite folks to take a look at

    http://www.coal-ucg.com/ucgengineeringservices.html

Of interest to me is that at depths >600 m the ground water issues diminishes and in fact the syngas production increases

And more relevant is the Sasol strategies

    http://www.bohlweki.co.za/img/File/Sasol%20UCG/UpdateFeb2009/Appendix%20C%20Issues%20Trail.pdf

In this report they state "UCG are operated below the hydrostatic pressure of the groundwater meaning that all products will flow towards the gasifier "

the report is from October 2008 so they should be well advanced by now

Of interest also is the fact that there are no staff deployed underground making this another plus (less likely injury or death)

    Tjhe there is this http://www.engr.pitt.edu/pcc/ugctutorial.html

Ms Mary Bloomstran seems to be a good contact for environmental approvals and gen knowledge in thsi area

    The there is http://www.dme.qld.gov.au/zone_files/Sustainable/rohan_courtney_uk_australia_ucg_presentation.pdf

which I find really useful, have a look at slide 7, 10

they mentioned again "Active process control to ensure cavity flows are always inward" and " Deeper coal seams reduce the environmental risk"

This technology is in summary way way better than CSG and traditional strip and export methods by orders of magnitude IMO. Just need to prove it up is all

    A paper from 1999 ! CSIRO
    http://www.australiancoal.csiro.au/pdfs/walker.pdf

Good questions but I am happy its all OK
The last paper mentioned the CRIP process and environmental ground water considerations (or references)

In summary how on earth can the likes of AOE and others in the CSG space get EIS approval with really dirty surface water production and since they can we would ahve to be be doubly optimistic about UCG
