Whilst the article asserts 91% of loans in 2020 in California were BNPL, what he doesn't say is the nature of those loans... they were pretty small for the most part.
This is from the 2020-CFL-Aggregated-Annual-Report.pdf where the headline 91% figure came from (actually page 2 of the report, not the exhibit I show above). Interesting tidbit from the same section: "Consumer loans with a principal loan amount of at least $2,500 but less than $10,000 and an Annual Percentage Rate (“APR”) of 100 percent or more originated in 2020 decreased by 99.9 percent, to 36 from 376,645 in 2019. The total principal amount of such consumer loans decreased by 99.9 percent over the same period, to $155,000 from $1.2 billion."
