why would gold have tto have a round about settlement.
were not saying that Iran would rock up at Chinas dor with a bag full of various weight bullion to give them what they owe...
the gold could be held, ( and audited regularly) by each country, and the exchanges are calculated in monetary terms with the gold there to back up the validity of the exchange.
if its required that physical need be transferred, then its easy to calculate the amounts and deliver to the gramme, the exact amount, but i doubt that would be practical, better to have a gold backed paper exchange system.....

now there's a thought eh!!!???
