Company backs premiers' carbon trading pledge

A company that brokered one of the first carbon trading agreements in Queensland has welcomed an agreement from the state premiers to create their own emission schemes.

The leaders pledged to create their own carbon trading schemes by 2010 if the Federal Government did not do so.

Last year, Carbon Pool established a scheme that allows south-west Queensland graziers to forgo their right to clear land and allows major industrial companies to use those rights to off-set their own carbon gas emissions.

Managing director Mark Jackson says he expects the carbon trading industry to take off with the signing of the Premiers' agreement.

"I think that the announcement is part of a general move towards something that's an historical inevitability, which is a price on greenhouse gas emissions and a progressive reduction in the levels of greenhouse gases reaching the atmosphere," he said.

"It's going to be a huge industry."
