I've dug deeper. The fact that other Telco's have built out their own infrastructure (TPG, iiNet etc) proves the Government could have stayed well clear. These build outs have taken place even after draconian legislation was put in place to hamper competition to the NBN. Without the NBN, demand would have still eventuated with the take off of streaming etc, and supply would have responded. Typical market forces.
Then there is the issue of new technologies rendering the NBN obsolete in certain areas.
As a general rule, Governments should stay out of markets. Another great example.
